Religious Event
The Brahmarathotsava at Chaturmukha Brahma Jinalaya is a grand chariot festival held at one of Karnataka's most architecturally magnificent Jain temples, in Karkala a heritage town in the Udupi district. Karkala is also home to the iconic 13-meter monolithic statue of Gomateshwara (Bahubali), one of the tallest free-standing stone statues in India. The Rathotsava (chariot procession) draws Jain pilgrims, heritage enthusiasts, and cultural travellers from across the country, making it one of the most distinct and lesser-known cultural events in the Udupi district.
The Attur Jatre, the annual feast of the Saint Lawrence Shrine Basilica in Karkala is one of the most spiritually powerful and widely attended multi-faith festivals in Karnataka. The Basilica, built in 1759 and elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica by Pope Francis in 2016, is revered across South India for its miraculous history and the deep, unshakeable faith of its devotees. Every January, for five extraordinary days, pilgrims of all faiths Catholic, Hindu, and Muslim converge at this hillside shrine in the Udupi district to seek blessings from St. Lawrence, making the Attur Jatre a truly remarkable cultural and spiritual event in Udupi.
