About the Event

The Attur Jatre operates as one of the largest interfaith gatherings in coastal Karnataka. Held annually during the last week of January at the St. Lawrence Shrine Basilica in Karkala, this five-day event draws lakhs of devotees. Built in 1759 and elevated to a minor basilica in 2016, the granite church anchors a festival where religious boundaries blur. While it remains a Roman Catholic feast centered on Novena prayers and daily Konkani masses, the majority of the attendees are Hindus and Muslims fulfilling vows made to the patron saint.

The physical scale of the event transforms the rural outskirts of Karkala. Devotees line up for hours to reach the main altar and light candles at designated outdoor shrines. A distinct tradition here involves structured almsgiving; hundreds of individuals seeking alms sit along the assigned pathways, and visitors systematically distribute small change to them as part of their personal vows. The church grounds also house a Pushkarini (holy pond), an architectural feature common to Hindu temples but rare in a Catholic basilica, where pilgrims wash their hands and feet before entering the main complex.

Beyond the immediate church courtyard, a massive temporary market occupies the approach roads. Vendors sell everything from regional agricultural tools and heavy cast-iron cookware to glass bangles and local snacks like jelebi and churmuri. Navigating this space requires significant walking, as local police enforce vehicle blockades several kilometers away from the basilica to manage the pedestrian volume. Attending the Attur Jatre provides a direct observation of how a regional Catholic institution integrates with the broader demographic and agricultural calendar of Tulu Nadu.

  • The tradition of candle lighting thousands of devotees light candles at the shrine as an act of personal vow-fulfilment, and the candlelit evenings create an atmosphere of extraordinary visual beauty and collective prayer
