Paryaya Festival

Religious EventUdupi CityOnce in 2 years

The Paryaya Festival is one of the most revered and visually spectacular temple events in South India, celebrated once every two years at the iconic Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi. This ancient ceremony marks the formal transfer of temple administration from one of the eight Vaishnava mathas to the next, a living tradition believed to be over 700 years old, dating back to the era of saint-philosopher Sri Madhvacharya. For pilgrims, cultural travellers, and first-time visitors alike, this is among the most soul-stirring upcoming events in Udupi you can experience.

About the Event

The Paryaya Festival is one of the most significant events in Udupi, marking a 700-year-old tradition that rotates temple administration among the eight Vaishnava mathas (monasteries). Celebrated once every two years, this event signals the formal transfer of authority over the Sri Krishna Temple from the outgoing pontiff to the incoming one. It is a moment where religious practice, historical continuity, and public celebration intersect in the heart of the city.

The ceremony begins in the early hours of the morning. The incoming pontiff, known as the Peetadhipathi, arrives in a golden palanquin, leading a procession that winds through the streets surrounding the temple complex. Caparisoned elephants, traditional nadaswaram bands, and thousands of devotees accompany the procession, creating a distinct rhythm in the city center. This walk from Jodukatte to the Sri Krishna Temple is the visual highlight of the festival, representing the formal arrival of the new administration.

Upon reaching the temple, the incoming pontiff completes specific rituals, including the installation of the deity's symbolic keys and the formal assumption of the 'Paryaya Peetha' (the seat of the temple administration). Throughout the day, the temple complex hosts a series of special prayers, discourses by scholars, and classical music concerts. The event operates as a festival within a festival, with Yakshagana performances staged at multiple venues across Udupi.

For the visitor, the festival offers an unfiltered look at a living, unbroken tradition. The temple serves thousands of devotees a free community feast, a practice that reflects the centuries-old hospitality of the institution. While the core of the event is religious, the scale of the gathering turns the city streets into a major cultural site, drawing researchers, photographers, and travelers from across India. It remains the most definitive experience of Udupi’s spiritual and historical identity.
